The man who died in a house fire at Malin Head in Inishowen has been named as Jeffrey McLaughlin.

The 42 year old optician was found dead outside a house at Malin Head in the early hours of Saturday.

The late Jeffrey McLaughlin.

The late Jeffrey McLaughlin.

The popular father-of-three, originally from Carndonagh, is understood to have been living in Derry and was a well-known member of the local sub-aqua club.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at Carnmalin shortly after midnight and found Mc Laughlin’s  body outside the house.

Specialist Garda forensic officers from Dublin carried out a full investigation into the cause of the fire.

Locals reported hearing a loud explosion around midnight.

The house was badly damaged with the roof and masonry completely destroyed.

One theory is that gas canisters used by Mr McLaughlin for diving may have exploded.
