Derry City Council is to carry out a one off weeding and rubbish collection in a number of mews lanes in the Rosemount and lower Strand areas of the city over the next few weeks.

Welcoming the initiative, Sinn Fein councillor of the area, Mickey Cooper, said the clean-up would address a number of issues in both areas.

He said ” I am delighted that Derry City Council (DCC) have agreed to my proposal that the mews lanes behind a number of streets in both Rosemount and lower Strand Road will be addressed in the next couple of weeks.

“The scheme will see DCC work in collaboration with community groups and local residents to make progress on the weeding of lanes, collection of dumped rubbish and the replacement of any missing keys or locks from the gates which are in place along these streets.

“The streets in question are not normally cleaned by Council as they are private addresses meaning council has no remit to clean them.

“However, Council have agreed to a one off programme to deal with these issues and have urged residents including landlords of rental properties to look after the areas behind their property ensure that the same problems do not repeat themselves in future.”

Cllr Cooper said he would be providing a leaflet to the residents of each affected street in the next couple of weeks which would also provide information on what types of weed killers and other repellents could be safely used to ensure weeds do not return once the works are completed.
