SINN FEIN ACCUSES DUP OF “POLITICAL INTERFERENCE”

Cllr Ruairi McHugh.

Sinn Féin have accused the DUP of political interference in the justice system following the announcement from the Public Prosecution Service that they are to pursue a prosecution against the organiser of the Tyrone Volunteers Commemoration which took place in Castlederg last August 2013.

Local  Sinn Féin Councillor Ruairí McHugh said The Public Prosecution Service had originally determined there would be no prosecutions following the commemoration last year which, he said,  took place in a “dignified and respectful manner” and passed off without any incidents.

He added: “In what is a clear case of political interference in the justice system by the DUP, the PPS have now said that they will pursue a prosecution of the organiser over an alleged breach of a Parades Commission determination in relation to uniforms worn by the republican colour party.

” The DUP or anyone else for that matter will not prevent the Republican Movement from commemorating our patriot dead nor will they succeed in their attempts to criminalise those who attend or take part in these events.

“The people of Castlederg would be far better served by the DUP and other unionist parties if they would show a bit of leadership for once and entered into dialogue with myself and other Sinn Féin elected representatives to discuss issues such as the multitude of loyalist parades and flags among others which have such a negative impact for the people and businesses in Castlederg.”
