Sinn Fein MLA Cathal Ó hOisín.

Last night’s gun attack in Dungiven in which shots were fired into a parked car in the town has been condemned as “disgusting” and “reckless.”

A man wearing a hooded top fired two shots into the vehicle at  Hass Park at around 10.10pm.

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has said those who carried out the attack had only succeeded in creating fear and anxiety in the local community.

Mr Ó hOisín added: ‘The person who fired two shots into a car in Dungiven last night have accomplished nothing except to heighten tensions and fear.

“The local community is totally disgusted that guns have yet again been brought onto the streets of Dungiven.

“As in previous similar incident the attack has only succeeded in making people fearful and those involved should desist immediately any further acts of intimidation.”

SDLP Councillor Michael Coyle has condemned the attack “reckless.”

Cllr Coyle, who lives in Dungiven, said: “This was a completely reckless attack in a quiet residential area, and it is extremely worrying for people who live there, and indeed everyone in the area.

“Thankfully, no one was injured in this madness. Whoever is behind the attack must realise they have absolutely nothing to offer society and there can be no justification whatsoever for what happened.”

He concluded: “I appeal to anyone who knows anything about the incident to contact police.”
