Baby Sopbie who died in Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The mother of a baby from Derry who died in Great Ormond Street Hospital has vowed to fight for the rest of her life to find out what happened.

Leanne Maguire was speaking after it was announced an investigation was to take place into her two-week-old daughter Sophie’s death at the hospital, regarded as one of the top children’s hospitals in the world.

Following surgery at the London hospital to prevent too much blood flowing to her brain, Sophie appeared to be making a recovery but took a turn for the worse and died in her mother’s arms at 15 days old.

A death certificate was issued but a post-mortem examination was never carried out to establish the cause of death.

Ms Maguire has welcomed an investigation into the circumstances around Sophie’s death which is to be carried by the chief coroner of England and Wales.

The heartbroken mother of one said she had been told by a member of staff Sophie “should not have died.”

Stating Sophie fought for 15 days, she said she would fight for the rest of her life to find out what happened.
