The CultureTECH festival currently taking place in Derry plays a “key factor” in growing the city’s science and technology sector, SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood has said.

Over 40,000 people are expected to attend the week-long festival which Mr Eastwood said was at the heart of Derry’s {revolution in science, technology and all things digital.”

Mr Eastwood said: “The CultureTECH festival has grown year on year since its inception and nurtured the growth of our creative industries.

“This year the event is expected to attract an audience of around 40,000 people with world leaders in science and technology showcasing in the city.

“CultureTECH helps to promote Derry’s technology sector by embedding creative innovation in our young people by giving them the opportunity to engage with global leaders their fields.

“More than 15,000 young people are due to take part in the festival activities this week and that fact highlights the educational influence of the event.

“The success of the event can only have a positive impact in encouraging our young people to pursue studies in science and technology and to choose careers which will be the bedrock of a regenerated Derry economy.”

Mr Eastwood concluded: “CultureTECH promotes entrepreneurship and learning in the community and voluntary sector as well as within the city’s business community to further embed the ethos of digital technology at the heart of our economy.”
