FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY OVER “MTV CRASHES” WEEKEND

CultureTECH – the week-long festival of technology, media and music – and Derry City Council have announced details of dozens of events taking place at venues throughout the city over this weekend’s “MTV Crashes” event. 

The family-friendly line-up includes video games arcades, a new MTV Academy workshop, live music and the unique Music City 2014 Dome in Guildhall Square.

Director of Legacy with Derry City Council, Oonagh McGillion, said the packed programme would appeal to youngsters of all ages, making the weekend’s festivities accessible to all.

“The MTV Crashes weekend promises to be one of the real highlights of our 2014 Music City programme, and with CultureTECH and Culture Night both taking place, this will be a fun packed weekend for all the family,” she declared.

“Culture Night is always extremely popular, and this year’s programme features over 50 family friendly events and the ideal opportunity for parents to bring the kids along to enjoy new cultural experiences. The city’s CultureTech Festival, is also growing in success year on year, not only highlighting the city’s position at the forefront of digital technology both in terms of infrastructure and creative talent, but also in providing a fantastic variety of innovative and cutting edge events.

“And on the Sunday night music lovers who might have missed out on tickets to the MTV Crashes events, can join the Music Trail, a fantastic showcase of local talent for all ages.”

Highlights of the weekend will include:

City Arcade – Three full days of free-to-play video games events across six city-centre venues including a major Minecraft Tournament in The Guildhall starting at 3pm on Friday afternoon.

Club MTV DJ School – As part of the MTV Academy and supported by Bounce, 12-18 year olds will learn DJ techniques, get tips on MCing and production, and create and download their own tracks to take away.

Music City 2014 Dome – A 360 degree high-definition video dome in Guildhall Square which will host three nights of free evening performances. The daytime line up of dome family shows on the Saturday and Sunday will include a variety of free arts and educational shows as well as special screenings of the full Pink Floyd album The Wall on Sunday afternoon.

Retro Film Night – A free evening of outdoor screenings in the Craft Village, featuring 80’s classics Weird Science and The Last Starfighter.

Retrotech / Futuretech – The first major event at the newly opened NW Regional Science Park with DJs and video games projected onto the side of the building.

Culture Night Derry – A city-wide programme of indoor and outdoor cultural events showcasing the city’s diverse talents have been programmed, including art workshops and exhibitions, cultural traditions, museum visits, dance, film, literature, circus skills and more.

Just a few of the many highlights include a spectacular Chinese Dragon Dance display in Guildhall Square; a 1940s themed Club Cabaret at The Playhouse; a pop-up recording studio in the Nerve Centre; and a Siege Stories Grand Parade on the City Walls.

Brace yourselves too for a sharp intake of culture at Ireland’s Smallest and Speediest Festival in The Peace Garden at Guildhall Square at 7.00pm.

This family friendly music festival, incorporates a chain of events which any avid festival goers may experience in 12.5 minutes flat!

Kite Making Day – Local children aged 5-11 are invited to sign up for a special Kite-making workshop taking place on Sunday September 21, between 1pm – 5pm in Ebrington Square, as part of a joint initiative between Derry City Council and STEM Aware.

Maker Events – Hands-on technology activities on Saturday and Sunday for young people, hosted by BT, the Fab Lab and a range of local companies. This programme includes a free animation workshop delivered by local company Dog Ears, the Seagate-sponsored At Sixes and Sevens Creative Arts Lab hosted by Wall 2 Wall Music and a special “fruit orchestra” performed by 200 local school children.

Robots at Rath Mor – A family fun day complete with video games and tons of technology, hosted by Guildhall Press at the Rath Mor shopping centre.
