DURKAN CALLS FOR “ENERGY EFFICIENCY” BUILDINGS STRATEGY

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has supported a parliamentary motion at Westminster  calling on the British government to draw up and implement an “energy efficiency” buildings strategy to help reduce fuel bills and alleviate fuel poverty.

Mr Durkan, who is also a supporter of the Energy Bill Revolution’s campaign which aims to end fuel poverty, said greater energy efficiency and the installation of cost-effective measures to generate energy from buildings would reduce fuel bills, help to alleviate fuel poverty and achieve low carbon homes.

He added: “I am therefore supporting the Energy (Buildings and Reduction of Fuel Use) Bill which would require the government to draw up and implement a strategy to promote such measures.”

“One of the most important infrastructure priorities we face today is to stop homes from leaking heat – which would save hard-pressed families in Derry and throughout the North hundreds of pounds on their energy bills and help to end fuel poverty once and for all.

“I note with interest that the Sustainable Energy Association Manifesto demonstrates how an energy from buildings strategy would save every person in the UK £186 per year – as well as the wider economy £12 billion a year.
