Teachers and education providers attending Derry City Council’s Heritage Learning Fair later this month will be encouraged to avail of an exciting range of education programmes on offer from its Visitor and Museum Service.

The new products include an Archive Pack on the Plantation of Ulster and a series of comics specifically designed to cover a series of interesting historical periods.

The Learning Fair, scheduled to take place at Harbour House on Thursday, 25 September at 12.30pm, will help spread the word about all the great heritage themed activities that schools can do in and around the city.

Well known broadcaster Helen Mark will be guest speaker at the event, having recently presented the BBC 2 Ulster Scots programme a “Kist o Wurds.”

Margaret Edwards, Education Officer with the Museum Service said that the Fair was a great way to take learning out of the classroom, and use new tools to appeal to young people.

She is keen that teachers attending the Fair will be able to view the new resources and use them for the benefit of students.

One of the key resources she is keen to promote is a series of five comics depicting important historical themes.

“Funded by the Derry City Council Good Relations Strategy, the comics have been designed specifically for Key Stages 2 and 3 and are designed to be a different way of looking at our history,” she explained.

“The comics all come with a series of activities that teachers can use to promote greater understanding and learning. The comics deal with the following themes: Colm Cille – the Founding of Derry, O‘Doherty Rebellion of 1608, Emigration – the Pursuit of Happiness, Lunch Break in the Shirt Factory 1920, Surrender of the U Boats in 1945, and are available online via our website.”

Those who attend the Fair will also have the opportunity to meet other heritage providers in the city which will help teachers to plan their school visits more effectively.

Anyone interested in attending the Learning Fair, should contact Alex Mullan at the Tower Museum Tel: 028 7137 2411 or [email protected]
