Mayor Brenda Stevenson makes a splash at the bottom of the slide on Shipquay Street.

Up to 1,000 people slid down Derry’s Shipquay Street at the weekend – all in aid of charity.

The city centre was brought to a standstill on Saturday and Sunday as hundreds turned out to cheer on those brave enough to take on the challenge in aid of Cancer Research.

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan got the event underway when he was the first person to slide down Europe’s steepest city centre street on Saturday morning.

Derry Mayor, Cllr Brenda Stevenson, also discovered “Shipquay Street is a slippery street to slide on.”

It is hoped the event will raise in the region of £60,000 for the cancer charity.
