Sinn Féin Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has sent best wishes to Derry cleric Eamon Martin following his confirmation as Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland following the resignation of Cardinal Sean Brady.

Mr McGuinness said the people of Derry “in particular” would be “rightly proud” at Archbishop Martin’s elevation to the highest office of the Catholic Church in Ireland.

He added: “I have known Archbishop Eamon Martin for many years. He is a progressive thinker and a man who has demonstrated an ability to connect with ordinary catholics.

“The next few years will be crucial for the Church and Archbishop Martin as he sets about restoring confidence in congregations throughout the country.

“I look forward to his official elevation to the position of Cardinal and Primate of all-Ireland.”

Mr McGuinness concluded: “I wish him well in meeting the many challenges that he will face in the years ahead.”
