The suspect object which sparked a security alert in Strabane earlier today was an “elaborate hoax,” police have said.

Bomb disposal experts were called to the town following the discovery of the object in the garden of a house at Innisfree Gardens in the town.

A number residents, including a number of elderly people, who were moved from their homes have been allowed to return.

PSNI Chief Inspector Andy Lemon said such incidents caused “distress and anxiety” to those affected.

He added: “It also causes disruption to the local community and I would condemn the actions of those responsible.

“I would like to thank the local Community Association for all of their help and support today in evacuating residents.

“I would also like to thank local residents for their assistance, patience and understanding during this alert.”

CI Lemon appealed for anyone with information to contact police.

He said: “I would appeal to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area or who has any information to contact police at Strabane on the non emergency number 101.

“Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
