SHIPQUAY STREET: A SLIPPERY STREET TO SLIDE ON

shipquaystreetslideDerry’s Shipquay Street will become a slippery street to slide on tomorrow – all in the aid of charity.

Among those supporting the Slide on Cancer event is the city’s Mayor, Cllr Brenda Stevenson, who has encouraged as many people as possible to come out show their support the fundraising initiative in aid of Cancer Research.

The event will transform the entire length of Shipquay Street – one of the steepest city centre streets  in Europe – into a massive three-lane water slide.

The custom-built slide will be open from 10.00am-5.00pm on each day and will start at the top of the street, ending at Shipquay Gate with a huge “splash zone.”

The slide will be similar to the one used during the Bristol Festival but organisers say Derry’s slide will be “bigger and better.”

A DJ, PA system and few “VIPs” are planned for the event.

Cllr Stevenson said she was “hugely excited” about seeing the iconic city centre street transformed into a giant waterslide.

She said: “The Slide On Cancer event promises to be an epic event for the city, attracting people from all over the city and region who have pledged to slide down the giant slide to raise money for cancer research.

“Interest in this event has been huge, everyone is talking about it and it promises to be a real spectacle.

“It’s a fantastic idea, not only is it fun and innovative but its a great way of raising awareness of the charity and getting people involved in a community activity.

“I am looking forward to going along on Saturday and lending my support to the organisers who have worked tirelessly over the past number of months to make sure this happens.”

She concluded: “To everyone taking part, a big thank you and of course to everyone who is so generously supporting the charity, we are very grateful. Here’s to another hugely successful event in Derry, hope to see you all there.”

Sharon Arbuckle, fundraising manager for Cancer Research said: “We are hugely excited to be bringing this unique fundraising event to the city and we are encouraged with the unprecedented public response we’ve had so far.

“We’ve also had tremendous support from local traders in the Shipquay Street area and Derry City Council who are looking forward to what will undoubtedly be a fun and memorable event for everyone to enjoy.”
