Plans to add an extension to Pennyburn Youth Club in Derry have been welcomed by SDLP  Foyleside Councillor John Boyle.

Cllr Boyle was speaking after planners approved proposals to extend the club located on Buncrana Road next to St Patrick’s Church.

The club moved into the purpose-built building next to St Patrick’s Church on Buncrana Road in 1975, having previously operated out of the assembly hall at St Patrick’s primary school.

Councillor Boyle said the approved.plans would progress towards the “physical improvement” of the club.

He added: “The management and directors must be commended for their foresight and hard work towards securing the future of what is a valuable facility for young people in the Pennyburn area and beyond.”

“Pennyburn Youth Club has been an integral part of the youth support system in our city for well over a generation and I well remember the facility from when I was a teenager.

“It is wonderful to see an enhancement of the facility by way of an overall refurbishment of the building and a much needed extension to the sports hall.”

Cllr Boyle concluded: “These are exciting times for all those involved, not least the young people who use this excellent resource.”
