Cllr Brian Tierney.

SDLP Derry City Councillor Brian Tierney has called for improvement works to be carried out in the Fern Park area of Galliagh.

Cllr Tierney made the appeal after being contacted by residents who are concerned the grounds in and around the estate have become run-down.

Cllr Tierney said: “The grounds of Fern Park look like they have been left unattended for quite some time, and residents of the area have raised their concerns with me. They feel the area is in a bad state of disrepair and requires immediate attention from the relevant bodies.

“I have visited the estate and taken a walk around with residents, some of whom feel the area has been ignored by the Housing Executive and left in a run-down state for quite some time.

“This is simply not good enough and I am now calling for improvement works to be carried out in and around the Fern Park area.

“I have spoken to the Teamwork’s Programme run by Shantallow Community Residents Association that can offer a community enhancement programme to spruce up the area.

“I have asked for a site meeting with both them and Housing Executive officials this week with a view to getting this work under way as soon as possible.”

Cllr Tierney concluded: “We, as a community, are committed to promoting a positive image of Galliagh and ensuring the local area is well maintained plays a massive part in this.”
