Landlords are being reminded that they should be registered on the Landlord Registration Scheme.
The scheme, launched in February last by Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland, requires all existing and new landlords to register and provide accurate and up to date information on themselves and their properties.
Once registered, landlords are provided with up-to-date information and support in relation to their duties and responsibilities.
The scheme enables Councils to ensure private landlords adhere to the law already in place for the private rented sector.
Minister McCausland said the scheme was “good news” for both landlords and tenants.
He added: “The scheme, for first time, provides a centrally held register of all landlords in Northern Ireland.
“The information collected will allow landlords to receive regular support and advice on carrying out their role and will improve tenants’ confidence in their landlord’s professionalism.
“So far over 7,000 landlords and 17,000 properties are registered. I would encourage all those who have not yet registered to do so as soon as possible.”
All private landlords are required to register immediately prior to letting a new tenancy or by 25 February 2015 if they have existing tenancies and no new lettings.
Janet Hunter, Housing Rights Service Director added: “The private rented sector has grown enormously in recent years so we welcome all Government initiatives, like landlord registration, that seek to improve standards for those renting privately. We believe the registration scheme introduced in February is step in the right direction and offers positive benefits for both landlords and tenants. We would encourage landlords to sign up.”
Tenants are encouraged to look for the Landlord Registration logo and number when taking up a new tenancy.
This provides reassurance that their landlord has complied with the statutory requirement to register.
