Former Derry City defender Emmet Friars has left Danske Bank Premiership club Portadown.

In a statement on their official website, the Shamrock Park club said the contract of the 28-year-old had been “terminated with immediate effect, by mutual consent.”

The statement added: “The club wish Emmet well in his future playing career and thank him very much for his services to Portadown FC.”

The left-back joined “The Reds” from Dungannon Swifts at the start of last season, making 15 appearances.

Following spells with Notts County, AFC Telford United, Tamworth, Hinckley United and Newry City, he played for his hometown club Derry City during the 2010-11 season, scoring three goals in 27 appearances.

Capped seven times for the Northern Ireland Under-21s, he joined Dungannon Swifts on 3 January, 2012, the same day his brother Sean also joined the club.
