A bird-friendly event being held tomorrow night is aimed at providing the public with information on how to help “our feathered friends” this spring other than feeding them.

At “A Bird in Your Hand,” being held in Altinure Hall in Park village from 7.00pm to 9.00pm,  bird experts from charities RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) and BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) will provide information on how you can help birds survive the bad weather.

The evening will feature a number of children’s activities and you will also get the chance at making  making a free nestbox to take home for your own garden.

A live bird of prey display will allow visitors to get up close and personal with native owls and other birds of prey.

Annie Mullan, community engagement officer with Faughan Valley Landscape Partnership urged people to attend.

She said: “Last year’s event was a great success but now we are in a bigger venue we will be able to bring you much more. We will have information on the care of birds, free nest boxes, birdfood samples as well as information on how to volunteer for bird surveys and lots to get kids interested in birds and nature .’

Mayor of Derry, Cllr Martin Reilly, has already got up close and personal with bird for prey, and said a visit tomorrow’s night would be worthwhile.

He added: “These birds are well cared for by their handler and do an important job of educating the public about the threats that their species face in our countryside.’
