A public meeting is to be held this afternoon in a bid to deliver a more permanent resolution to ongoing flooding the Foyle Springs/Ballymagroarty area of Derry.

The multi-agency meeting, organised by SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan and his party colleague on Derry City Council, Cllr John Boye, will take place in Holy Family Primary School at 1.00pm.

Among the buildings affected by recent flooding was Holy Family Church.

Encouraging residents to attend the meeting to “put forward their issues,” Mr Durkan, the North’s Environment Minister, said he also wanted to hear the “future plans for the area.”

He added: “I am keen to ensure a more permanent resolution for the area is implemented.

“Recently we have seen the Greater Foyle Springs area and the Holy Family Parish suffer widely due to heavy rainfall.

“While I am delighted I have been able to assist many families in the immediate aftermath of flooding,

“We cannot allow residents and our local church community to be left dealing with such disasters in the future. The SDLP has organised a multi-agency meeting on Friday 22nd August to take place at 1pm in Holy Family Primary School.

Councillor John Boyle also urged residents to attend.

He said: “From speaking with residents in the Foyle Springs area and local clergy, I share their frustrations at this ongoing problem.

“I believe this meeting on Friday will open up this issue, allowing residents the opportunity to work with all bodies to reach a swift and effective response.

“I urge anyone interested to attend and get in touch with the SDLP on 028 71 365516 if you have any queries ahead of the meeting.”

Cllr Boyle concluded: “I look forward to working closely with the community to reach a workable solution for the betterment of the area.”
