TILBURY CONTAINER DEATH: DERRY MAN ARRESTED

tilburyA 34-year-old Derry man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the death of a man inside a shipping container in Essex, England, at the weekend.

The dead man was one of 35 people from Afghanistan, including 15 children, found at Tilbury Docks on Saturday.

The arrested man, from Limavady, is also being detained on suspicion  of facilitating illegal entry into the UK.

The suspect, arrested at lunchtime today, is being held at the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim Police Station and is due to be transported to Essex for questioning later.

PSNI detectives assisting Essex Police and other agencies in the investigation into the  tragedy arrested the man after police stopped a vehicle on the A1 near Banbridge.

Searches at a number of properties were also carried out.

The dead man has been named as 40-year-old Meet Singh Kapoor, from Afghanistan.

His body, and 34 surviving men, women and children, were discovered in a container shipped from Zeebrugge in Belgium to Tilbury.

The survivors were taken to hospital have since been discharged into the care of British Home Office officials.
