The Stables Building in Ebrington Square is currently hosting a fascinating new exhibition celebrating the work of a group of international craft artists.

Reclaim/Repurpose is an intriguing showcase of craft which was launched officially by Mayor of Derry Brenda Stevenson as part of Derry City Council’s LegenDerry August Craft Month.

The exhibition features work by ten acclaimed artists, and displays an eclectic mix of craft disciplines, from metal work to textiles.

Curated by local artist Seliena Coyle, and facilitated by ILEX URC who provided the gallery space, it follows on from last year’s highly successful CultureCraft exhibition, which was part of the City of Culture Visual Arts programme for 2013.

Councillor Stevenson, welcoming guests to the new space, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many people turning out this evening to see the exhibition, which just indicates the level of interest there is in the craft industry in Derry.

“Following on from our Culture programme last year, the Council remains committed to growing and strengthening the craft industry here in the city. I would encourage everyone to come along and view the challenging and fascinating pieces on display. I think it really will change people’s perceptions of craft, and the role it now plays in the contemporary art world.”

Legacy Director with Derry City Council, Oonagh McGillion, said she was delighted at the level of interest in the exhibition.

“I really believe that Derry has the potential to become an international craft hub, and the high calibre of the international names in this exhibition certainly demonstrates that,” she said.

“As part of the Council’s Legacy Programme we will continue to work with local craft artists in creating new opportunities, establishing a strong cross border network of craft makers, and building the city’s profile as an exciting craft destination.”

The exhibition will be open from 10.00 to 6.00pm daily at the Stables in Ebrington Square until the end of the month.
