The Caw/Nelson Drive estate in Derry’s Waterside has had an environmental makeover, thanks to the work of the local community group and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.
The Executive’s grounds maintenance team, district office staff and members of Caw/Nelson Drive Action Group joined forces to transform the estate.
Work on the estate, which is one of the main gateways into the city, has included new entrance beds, the rejuvenation of woodland areas and community gardens at a cost of £9,000.
Plans are also ongoing for the creation of a community growing space on the estate.
Stephen Proctor, grounds maintenance officer said the projects contributed to the personal and community well-being of residents in Caw/Nelson Drive and the Executive was “delighted” to have been involved.
He added: “Environmental projects ensure residents see positive changes in estates and it help to foster a sense of social inclusion and community cohesion, upholding the ideals of sustainability and biodiversity in today’s world.”
Mr Proctor said the planned community growing space will involve residents of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
Linda Watson, Co-Ordinator of Caw/Nelson Drive Action Group said: “We are delighted to have been involved with the Housing Executive in various projects over the past few years.
“The plans for the creation of community growing space on a derelict piece of land in Sperrin Park are very exciting and we are looking forward to seeing it coming to fruition in the coming months.”
Liam Lynch, grounds supervisor, said the Executive looked forward to continuing to work with the Caw/Nelson Drive Community Group to improve the environment and facilities for the betterment of all in the area.
