Foyle Valley AC’s Keith Shiels celebrates winning last year’s Waterside Half Marathon.

The big countdown is on to the city’s Waterside Half Marathon, which takes place on Sunday, 14 September.

All you runners and walkers out there are being encouraged to register in advance and be part of this hugely popular annual event.

Derry Mayor, Cllr Brenda Stevenson that this year the event organisers, Derry City Council, were confident it race will attract more participants than ever thanks to the growing popularity of running in the city and region.

Noel Munnis, Derry City Council, said there had been a “lot of interest” in the race, won last year by Foyle Valley AC’s Keith Shiels.

Noel said: “We have been getting online entries since the end of March and with an entry limit of 1,600 runners we would encourage anyone thinking of taking part to register now.

“We will be using the improved 2013 course and will be hoping for a repeat of good weather conditions we had last year. While we do not have the 10 Mile Challenge Walk this year, the 2K Waterside Fun Run is being retained. We are confident that it’s going to be another hugely successful sporting event for the city.”

Further details on the event and to register online and download the training schedule are available at www.derrycity.gov.uk/halfmarathon.
