A £3.3m Community Work Programme (CWP) to be delivered across Derry by the Greater Shantallow Area Partnership (GSAP) will help to “offset” the city’s high level of unemployment, SDLP Cllr Brian Tierney has said.

The initiative is being funded by the Social Investment Fund through the Office of Minister and First Minister.

Cllr Tierney, who attended the launch of the programme by Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness at the GSAP offices at Northside this morning, called his fellow Derry man to encourage his Executive colleagues  “to provide even more investment in this area given the well documented high levels of social and economic deprivation.”

Cllr Tierney said: “I would like to welcome this £3.3m initiative supported by the Social Investment Fund to provide support to 18-24 year-olds in long term unemployment in some of the most deprived areas of Derry.

“I wish to congratulate the Greater Shantallow Area Partnership on securing the funding to deliver this very worthwhile programme.

“The Community Work Programme will be a boost to Derry’s skills base and help off-set our high levels of unemployment as it will provide mentoring and educational support for a minimum of 100 young people in long-term unemployment.

Cllr Tierney added: “This move is long over due and we look forward to further projects being financed by the Social Investment Fund in the near future.”

Cllr Tierney concluded: “I would call on the Deputy Fiirst Minister to encourage his Executive colleagues to provide even more investment in this area given the well documented high levels of social and economic deprivation.”
