immaculateconeptionResidents in the Waterside area of Derry have been left “disgusted” after a college facing closure was targeted by vandals.

Eighteen windows at Immaculate Conception College in the Top of the Hill were smashed at around 4.00am on Wednesday morning.

Sinn Fein Cllr for the area, Christopher Jackson, said people were area were “disgusted” by the attack on the school which, he said, had left it with a “hefty repair bill.“

Cllr Jackson said: “Schools are centres of our communities and provide not just education for our children but also services for families, after schools projects, and outreach to the wider community.

“Many local community groups are amongst users of the school and all are very appreciative of the use of the school premises. We cannot allow a handful of people put all of that good work in jeopardy.

“This is an area with very few facilities and I would say to whoever is responsible for these attacks to stop, as they are only hurting their own community.

“It’s very sad to see this attack happening following the good news last week that a Masterplan for the regeneration of Top of the Hill area is a step closer. ”

Cllr Jackson concluded: “We cannot allow a handful of people undermine the good work going on the in local community and I would urge anyone with information on those responsible for the attack on the Immaculate Conception College to bring it forward immediately.”
