The Mayor of Derry is urging the public to support two of the city’s most worthy charities at a special Flag Day being held in the city centre next week.

Mayor Cllr Brenda Stevenson will be joining a team of volunteers taking to the streetson Sunday, 27 July, to collect for Something Special, which provides support and opportunities for people with learning difficulties, and Circle of Support for Autism Families, a vital network for those caring for children with Autism.

Mayor Stevenson said: “I am delighted to be able to offer support to both these charities throughout my term in office, as they have such an invaluable role to play within our community.

“The team at Something Special work tirelessly to create educational and social opportunities for people who cope daily with the challenges presented by living with learning disabilities.

“They provide a warm and welcoming centre and many creative and effective learning programmes, which make a tremendous difference to their members and their families.

“CoS Autism Families provides a support network for the families of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, by organising social outings, and offering a vital forum for sharing experiences and advice amongst parents and carers.”

She concluded: “I would encourage everyone to take the opportunity to show their support by making a donation, no matter how small, on the day or if anyone would like to join our team of collection volunteers they are more than welcome.”
