Rubbish dumped outside the Brandywell recycling centre.

There is anger in the Brandywell area of Derry after rubbish was dumped outside the local recycling centre closed during yesterday’s one day strike by public sector workers.

The centre, run by Derry City Council, was closed as staff joined in the industrial actionl organised by trade unions.

Council run facilities such as the city’s major tourist attractions, the Guildhall and Tower Museum, leisure centres and Housing Executive offices were also closed.

Several hundred people attended a city centre parade and rally in support of striking workers.

Bin collections were rescheduled and recycling centres were also closed,

Residents in the Lone Moor Road area are angered by those who turned up at the Brandywell centre and proceeded to dump their rubbish outside despite a large sign on the gate stating it was illegal to to so.

One resident said: “I am 100 per cent behind the workers but what people have done is disgusting. All they had to do was go away and bring their rubbish back again tomorrow.”
