Derry City eased into the next round of the Europa League with an emphatic 9-0 aggregate win over Welsh Premier League side Aberystwyth Town at Park Avenue this evening.

Leading 4-0 from the first leg in the Brandywell last Thursday, two goals in a three minute spell in the first 15 minutes of the game killed off any hope Town had of making it through to the next round.

Michael Duffy’s headed goal in the 11th minute was followed by another successful header from Barry McNamee three minutes later.

Rory Patterson completed the rout with a second half-trick with goals in the 60th and 84th minutes and a penalty four minutes from time.

It was a record-breaking night for City, the result being Derry’s biggest away win in Europe.

Peter Hutton’s side will now host  Shakhtyor Soligors, of Belarus, in the first leg of a second round qualifier next Thursday with the away leg taking place seven days later in the city of Salihorsk.

Before that, Derry will play Bray Wanderers in the SSE Airtricity Premier Division in Brandywell on Sunday.

Unused ubstitutes: Sion James, Rhydian Davies, Jamie Butler, Wyn Thomas.

Derry City: Gerard Doherty, Ryan McBride, Dean Jarvis, Cliff Byrne, Aaron Barry, Michael Duffy, Patrick McEleney (Philip Lowry 61), Barry McNamee, Barry Molloy (Shane McEleney 69), Mark Timlin, Rory Patterson.
