International athlete Harry Speers has been confirmed as a competitor in the Firmus Energy City of Derry Triathlon taking place in the city this Sunday.

Around 500 participants are expected to compete in the event which will start at 10.000am with a 750 metre open water swim in the River Foyle followed by a 20km closed road cycle and culminate with a 5k flat city centre run taking in iconic Peace.

Race director Paul McGilloway, of the North West Triathlon Club (NWTC), said he was delighted Northern Ireland international Speers would be competing and had chosen the City of Derry triathlon   as a “worthy event” for his Commonwealth Games preparations.

As well as serious competition, the event has been organised a day out for all the family.

Paul explained: “This year’s triathlon will be a great day out for all the family and I know that the participants are spurred on when they hear lots of cheering and support from the crowds so we hope to see lots of people lining the route.

“During the day there will be fun activities to celebrate the triathlon and showcase the city as a centre of sporting excellence while displaying the many beautiful landmarks and scenery in the area.”

He concluded: “If you are looking for something to do on Sunday or will be about the City, please come out and show your support!”

The presentation of prizes to the winners will take place afterwards in the City Hotel.

The full route and details of the event can be found at www.firmusenergyderrycitytriathlon.com.
