SDLP have co-opted Mark O’Donnell on to the Derry City Council seat vacated by former councillor Jimmy Carr.

Carr resigned from the party last month amid allegations of improper use of a council-owned iPad.

He had been a member of the City Council since 2011 but failed to win a seat on the new Derry City and Strabane District Council at local government elections in May.

Cllr O’Donnell (27) will hold the seat until 1 April next year when the Derry-Strabane “super council” will come into effect.

Speaking after his selection, Cllr O’Donnell said: “Thank you to the SDLP members for their faith in me.

“Words can’t describe what an honour it is to have been selected to represent the people of Shantallow and of Derry.”
