Derry must have adequate public toilet facilities to cope with increasing demand, SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has said.
Cllr Tierney was speaking ahead of tomorrow’s meeting of Derry City Council’s Environmental Services Committee which will be addressed Raymond Martin of the British Toilet Association (BTA).
Cllr Tierney said he was “hopeful” the BTA could guide the Council on the best way to improve public toilet facilities in the city.
He said the provision of toilets available for use by the public in Derry was was “not adequate” and it was a situation which must be addressed.
He added: “In recent years Derry has enjoyed unprecedented numbers of visitors and has rightfully been secured as one of the premier destinations on these islands so it is important that properly maintained facilities exist to cope with the influx.
“I understand that during our year as City of Culture there were a number of complaints about the lack of public toilets in the city.
“It is vital that our hospitality to visitors and our own population alike includes the provision adequate toilet facilities.

“We currently have a single toilet at Ebrington Square and paid for facilities at Victoria Market but there is an obvious need for increased facilities in the city.
“The lack of public toilets in the proximity of the quay area has been a particular concern for members of the public and business people I have spoken to in the area.”
Cllr Tierney concluded: “I look forward to the British Toilet Association’s visit to the Guildhall chamber. It is important that we as a council now take on board the recommendations made by Mr Martin regarding the public toilet facilities we have in the city in order to improve on the current situation.”
