RED ARROWS-CLIPPER RACE START: LONG TAILBACKS LEAVE MANY DISAPPOINTED

The Red Arrows fly overhead as the Derry Clipper sets off on race 15 from Greencastle.

It was the perfect finale to a magical week on the Foyle – simply LegenDerry – but not for everyone!

While thousands on both banks of Lough Foyle enjoyed yesterday’s aerobatic display by the Red Arrows at the start of leg 15 of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race at Greencastle, many from Derry who had hoped to enjoy the event were left disappointed as they did not get to see the spectacular send-off due to lengthy tailbacks on the main Derry to Moville road – the  30 minute journey reportedly taking up to two hours.

The Derry “LondonDerry” Doire crew is just five points short of a podium place in the overall race standings thanks to winning race 14 from New York to Derry and skipper Sean McCarter and his crew got off to a flying start, crossing  the line first ahead of GREAT Britain and Qingdao in second and third respectively.

The near 800 nautical mile race 15 will see the fleet navigate around Scotland into the North Sea and then on to the historic naval port of to Den Helder on the north west edge of Holland where the first boats are expected to arrive on Thursday next.
