A number of “Super Hero” theme summer schemes are to be held across Derry this week as part of Cornerstone City Church’s “I Heart Derry” week.

The free schemes will run from 10.15am to 1.30pm from tomorrow  until Friday in Lisnagelvin Primary School, Currynierin Community Centre and Donemana Primary School.

Volunteers will also build playground in Creggan Pre-school and Training Trust a football tournament at the Magee pitches from 5.00pm to 9.00pm on Thursday will feature 16 teams representing groups right across the city.

Brian Somerville, senior pastor said Cornerstone membership came from all identities and geographical areas across the city so it was  important its community work reflected “that heart.”

He added: “Many people may know us for our Street Pastors Friday night community safety initiative in Shipquay Street and Altnagelvin hospital – but actually our ‘I Heart Derry’ annual initiative  is also very significant in local communities.

“Every year Cornerstone run free ‘kids week’ summer schemes the first week in July, build a playground for children in the city, run a cross-community soccer tournament and provide volunteers for some community ‘clean up’ initiatives.

“We also have a Mobile Medic team and a Prayer Station in the city centre during the same week”

The programme is open to all children of primary school age and there is an open invitation to everyone to attend the “I Heart Derry” final celebration on Sunday next at 10.30am in the Millennium Forum.
