TOWELL WIPES VICTORY FROM DERRY CITY WITH LATE, LATE GOAL

Derry City were denied a valuable three points by a late, late Dundalk goal in their SSE Premier Division clash at Brandywell.

In what was one of the home side’s best performances of the season, Richard Towell struck five minutes into injury time to grab a point for the visitors.

It was a performance Derry boss would have been looking for ahead of next week’s Europa League clash with Welsh Pemier League side Abersytwyth Town despite having to play the last 20 minutes of the game after having defender Cliff Byrne red carded in the 70th minute for an off the ball incident.

Kurtis Byrne put the Lilywhites in front when he prodded home in the 44th minute.

However, the lead lasted less than a minute, Barry McNamee brought the Candystripes level when he blasted past Peter Cherrie.

The Dundalk keeper picked the ball out of the back net for a second time just six minutes into the second half after he was given no chance from a Michael Duffy long distance effort.

City were reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute when defender Cliff Byrne was dismissed for an off the ball incident with Dundalk striker Peter Hoban.

Derry appeared to be on their way to taking all three points from the league leaders when a Towell strike on goal was deflected past Gerard Doherty.
