Damian blog on Road tax disc on car windscreenVehicle owners are being urged to use post office services to tax vehicles following closure of motor tax offices here next month.

From 17 July, all applications for road tax must be made online and processed in Swansea or purchased at post offices.

Derry Sinn Fein MLA Raymond McCartney said local jobs would be protected by using post office facilities.

He said: “Large numbers of rural households and businesses are unable to access even the most basic of broadband services.

“Therefore I would encourage as many people as possible to use their local post office and support local jobs.

“The closure of these local services and the resultant job losses is further evidence as to why it is important that maximum fiscal powers, including road tax be transferred to the Assembly.

“When closure of DVA services across the North was first proposed Sinn Féin called on then Minister Alex Attwood to seek support from his Executive Colleagues to have all Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) responsibility transferred to the Executive.

“On taking over from Alex Attwood, we asked the current Minister, Mark H Durkan to seek the support of DFP Minister Simon Hamilton and the rest of the Executive for this proposal.”

Mr McCartney concluded: “It is imperative that ministers have the ability to protect local jobs and services and they can only achieve this by demanding transfer of maximum powers to local control.”
