Nelson, who recently had open heart surgery, was so impressed with the treatment he received at Altnagelvin and Royal Victoria Hospital that he decided, along with several other former patients, to raise some money for the cardiology departments.

Nelson explained: “I would like to say a big thank you to all the fundraisers, their families and friends and to all the generous people who contributed to such an amazing total – £12,660, which has been shared equally between the two hospitals.

“On completion of the walk, we were treated to tea/coffee and biscuits in the Market Yard Restaurant at the kind invitation of Willis McLaughlin and his staff – a welcome opportunity for a chat and a well-earned rest.”

Accepting the donation on behalf of the Cardiology Department, Cardiac Rehab Nurse Shirley McGaffin said: “We are most grateful to everyone who took part in this huge fundraising effort.

“This large donation will be used for the benefit cardiac patients. It is great to see former patients being able to come together, with family and friends to enjoy such a worthwhile event.”
