The public has been called on to take part in a Human Rights Commission inquiry into emergency healthcare.

The call comes from Derry Sinn MLA, Maeve McLaughlin.

Ms McLaughlin, chairperson of the Stormont Health Committee, was speaking after officials from the Human Rights Commissions addressed the Assembly’s Health Committee on the inquiry into emergency healthcare.

Ms McLaughlin said she wanted to see as many people as possible taking part in the process.

She said: “When the Commission announced its investigation into whether patients’ human rights had been abused by delays at accident and emergency units I welcomed it and called for a robust inquiry.

“There will be a series of public forums held to gather the views and experiences of people who use emergency care services and I would encourage people to take part in those.

“The inquiry can also request departmental attendance and given the gravity of the situation, I would like to see the health minister take part as well.”

Ms McLaughlin concluded: “The crisis in our emergency care service is well known but it is much wider than that and the whole healthcare system needs to be looked at.”
