A group set up to support the Filipino community in the North West has been launched in Derry.

Kabalikat in the North West’ was launched with the support of Derry City Council at the Play Trail as part of Community Relations Week 2014.

Kabalikat, which means solidarity in the Filipino Tagalog language, was established as a voluntary group in January this year and has since gone from strength to strength locally.

The launch highlighted community needs, issues around racism and access to service provision as well as a positive cultural display of Filipino food, dance and musical performances.

Sue Divin, Council community relations officer, said having a formal Filipino community group to engage with would be a “great help” to the council and other organisations to work together to tackle serious issues like racism, equality and inclusion.
