A joint initiative by the Housing Executive and Land and Property Services to help tackle the problem of derelict properties in Derry and throughout the North has been welcomed by Waterside SDLP Councillor Martin Reilly.

Cllr Reilly, who has made consistent representations to the Department of Social Development on the issue, said empty properties brought “many problems” for neighbouring residents.

He added: “Indeed, they can blight neighbourhoods by creating health and safety concerns, are a target for antisocial behaviour, and can also drag down house prices in the area.

“Furthermore, they are a wasted resource in a city that has such a housing shortage.”

Cllr Reilly concluded: “I would encourage those affected by these issues to contact the Housing Executive’s Empty Homes Unit on 03448 920900 or visit www.emptyhomesni.com for further information on how the Housing Executive can help to resolve this problem.”
