Derry City Council’s Leisure and Sport have launched a range of exciting recreation camps for the summer holidays open to children between six and 12 years old with a host of disciplines to chose from such as cycling, dance, swimming and athletics.

The camps will run for a duration of eight weeks across the city’s leisure and community centres, offering a wide variety of activity led sports coaching for the holiday season, whether you want to have a go at judo, soccer, Gaelic football or try your hand at arts and crafts, or even cooking, them summer camp programme is specially designed so children of all ages can get the best from their summer holidays.”

Marking the opening of registration for the range of camps, Mayor Cllr Brenda Stevenson said  there really was something for everyone and for children across a range of all abilities.

“A great diverse programme of events has been launched and whether it’s fun swims lessons in the pool or craft workshops, cycling or basketball the variety of summer camps will run for a period of five days through the months of July and August.

“These camps offer children an opportunity to try something new, meet new friends and use their holidays for an opportunity to engage in a variety of healthy and sociable activity.”

Thomas McCallion, Community Health and Wellbeing Officer at Derry City Council, said: “More and more these days children may be tempted to spend their holidays on computer games or TVs or forced indoors given how wet our summer tends to be.

“As a focal legacy aim from our City of Culture year, Sports Development is dedicated to encouraging active participation from all children at an early age and these sports camps offer the perfect opportunity to do this.”

Continuing he said: “For those who want to take part but may not be fully engaged in sporting activities, the multi-sports camps incorporate a number of additional elements this year to include arts and crafts sessions and even cooking.  Parents, the kids will definitely have no valid excuses left this year as there really is something for everyone.”
