KEEP PUBLIC “UP TO SPEED” ON COUNCIL CHANGES – FLEMING

Local authorities have been called on to keep people informed of the changes to local government as a result of Review of Public Administration which has seen the formation of 11 “super councils” across the North.

The call comes from Derry City and Strabane District Sinn Fein Cllr Paul Fleming who was speaking ahead the first ever meeting of the Derry-Strabane “super council” in the Guildhall last night.

The new local authority will sit in “shadow form” alongside Derry City Council and Strabane District Council until it comes into effect on 1 April next year.

Describing the setting up of the new local authorities as the “biggest shake up of local government” in 40 years, Cllr Fleming said the new local authorities had a duty to explain the changes to local ratepayers.

He added: “While the new councils do not come into being formally until next April, newly elected councillors will meet this week to set up shadow structures in preparation for the changeover.

“There is a degree of uncertainty out there about what this will mean and what powers and responsibilities will have.

“In some cases information is available but all of the new bodies should ensure that the public are kept up to date about the changes through their websites, social media and the media.”

Cllr Fleming said information was also available on the Review of Public Administration website at www.rpani.gov.uk.
