Mayor of Derry Cllr Brenda Stevenson has pledged her support for the parishioners of Holy Family Church in Ballymagroarty after their church was flooded following heavy rain yesterday evening.

Mayor Stevenson said she has offered the services of Derry City Council to assist the parish priest Fr. Paddy O’Kane to get the church cleaned up and ready to host a First Holy Communion ceremony for local school children this Saturday.

Mayor Stevenson said: “It is very upsetting to see the level of damage caused to the Holy Family Church in such a short space of time and my thoughts and prayers are with Fr Paddy and his congregation.

“I have made contact with Fr. Paddy and told him that Derry City Council will be happy to assist in whatever way it can to ensure the Church is fit for purpose to host the First Communion on Saturday.

“I am delighted to see the great community spirit in the Ballymagroarty area and the way in which everyone has joined together to help and offer their support.”

It is the second time in recent years the church has been flooded and parish priest Fr Paddy O’Hagan claiming drainage around the church was inadequate.
