Winner Mia Shearring, of Nazareth House PS, and runners up of the Bike Week P6 poster competition were all smiles as they joined the Deputy Mayor, Alderman Gary Middleton to launch this year’s Bike Week festival. Included are Ross McGill of Sustrans, Brian Cassidy of Claudy Cycles, and Denise McCallion of the Public Health Agency.
Mia Shearring is all smiles after receiving her prize of a new bike from Deputy Mayor of Derry, Alderman Gary Middleton, her prize in winning the “Bike Week’” poster competition.
The Nazareth House pupil was one of hundreds of primary six pupils from across the Derry City Council area invited to come up with an eye-catching design for this year’s festival and theme of “Better by Bike.”
Mia’s design was selected from the large number of entries received and has been made into a poster to promote “Bike Week 2014” which will from Saturday, 14 June until Sunday, 22 June next, earning her a brand new bike courtesy of sponsors Claudy Cycles.
The runners up in the competition each received cyclist goodie bags.
They were: Louise Harkin and Jadim Divin of St Therese’s, Aimee Mary Loughrey of Nazareth House and Radhika Gupta of Lisnagelvin PS and Sophie Read of Oakgrove PS.

Having seen the posters produced from Mia’s design, Deputy Mayor Alderman Gary Middleton said she was a worthy winner of the competition
Ald Middleton said: “All the designs are excellent and Mia’s poster is very well drawn with a happy cyclist enjoying a spin away from the traffic. It gets across the message of Bike Week and will get people thinking about cycling which is both great exercise and a convenient way of getting about.”
The sustainable transport charity, Sustrans and the Derry Access Forum have teamed up with local cycling clubs and community groups to deliver a range of exciting events as part of Bike Week for 2014. This year’s festival has been made possible through funding from DRD-Travelwise, the Public Health Agency and Derry City Council.
