Airtricity Premier Division leaders Dundalk dumped Derry City out of the EA Sports Cup with a 2-1 quarter-final win at Brandywell tonight.

David McMillan put the visitors in front in the 28th minute when he smashed the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box after being set up by Ciaran O’Connor.

Prior to that, Raymond Foy – one of a number of changes in City’s starting line-up from Friday’s 2-0 win over Drogheda – wasted the chance to put the home side in front when shot straight at Sava in the 15th minute.

Following a double Derry substitute in the 57th minute – Joshua Tracey and Patrick McEleney replacing Tony McNamee and Raymond Foy  – Derry took control and within ten minutes created two goalscoring opportunities.

First, Dean Jarvis blazed over before Rory Patterson forced his way through but had his effort saved by Sava.

Against the run of play, Kurtis Byrne put the visitors in command when he found the bottom left hand corner of the net in the 74th minute.

Patrick McEleney set up an exciting finish when he scored in the 82nd minute but Dundalk held on progress to the semi-finals.

Derry City: Ciaran Gallagher, Shane McEleney, Dean Jarvis, Roddy Collins Jr, Aaron Barry, Danny Ventre, Barry McNamee (Michael Duffy 77), Tony McNamee (Joshua Tracey 57), Raymond Foy (Patrick McEleney 57), Rory Patterson, Enda Curran.

Substitutes: Gerard Doherty, Michael Duffy, Nathan Boyle, Jon Paul McGovern, Lee Toland.

Dundalk: Gabriel Sava, Manuel Kaguako, George Poynton, Mark Rossiter, Mark Griffin (Paul Finnegan 90+4), Ruaidhri Higgins, Conor McDonald, Ciaran O’Connor (Kurtis Byrne 60), Keith Ward (John Mountey 43), David McMillan.

Substitutes: Anto Reilly, Marfide Matondo, Peter Cherrie.
