ELECTION UPDATE: STEVENSON BOWS OUT IN SPERRIN

Paul Fleming is congratulated on being elected by his sister Lynn.

SDLP councillor Brenda Stevenson has failed to get elected on to the new Derry-Strabane “super council.”

Ms Stevenson, the niece of former SDLP leader John Hume, lost out to party colleague Jim McKeever in the Faughan District Electoral Area (DEA).

The city’s Deputy Mayor, DUP Alderman Gary Middleton, topped the poll was elected on the first count with 1077, 23 above the quota.

Also elected in the five-seater DEA were Paul Fleming (Sinn Fein), Maurice Devenney (DUP), Gus Hastings (SDLP), Jim McKeever (SDLP)

First preference votes were:

Cruickshank, Geoff (UKIP) 185

Devenney, Maurice (DUP) 936

Fleming, Paul (Sinn Fein) 895

Hastings, Gus (SDLP) 492

Hawthorne, David (Alliance) 336

Hughes, Paul (Independent) 501

McCrossan, Michael (Sinn Fein) 358

McKeegan, Ronnie (Ulster Unionist) 555

McKeever, Jim (SDLP) 493

Middleton, Gary (DUP) 1077

Stevenson, Brenda (SDLP) 490
