ELECTION LATEST: SINN FEIN LARGEST PARTY IN DERG

Sinn Fein  are the largest party in the Derg District Electoral Area (DEA) on the new Derry-Strabane “super council.”

The party’s sitting councillors, Maoliosa McHugh, Kieran McGuire and Ruairi McHugh were deemed elected on the fifth count without reaching the quota of 1268 having obtained 1055, 1072 and 1102 votes respectively in the first count.

Ulster Unionist Cllr Derek Hussey topped the polled and was elected on the first count with 1411 votes.

DUP Cllr Thomas Kerrigan was elected on the fourth count having gained 924 first preference votes.

The SDLP had put forward two candidates in the DEA, Jim McIntyre and Marie Ash, but both were eliminated after obtaining 415 and 410 first preference votes respectively.

Eligible electorate: 12526

Votes polled: 7716

Total Valid: Vote 7604

Quota: 1268
