Adrian and Damien Garvey, directors of the BWL Group, which will create 30 new jobs when they open the artisan coffee shop, Synge & Byrne in Foyleside Shopping Centre in July.

Over 350 people have applied for 30 jobs in a new artisan coffee shop set to open in the Derry’s Foyleside Shopping Centre this summer.

The new Synge & Byrne brand will open its first outlet in the North West in July and trade in Level Four.

It is part of the BWL Group, which also manages the O’Brien’s chain of coffee shops – a firm Irish favourite, also operating in the Centre’s food court.

The positions will include both full and part-time managers, kitchen staff and front of house servers.

Director, Damien Garvey said they were “overwhelmed” with the interest in the positions.

He added: “Applicants are mostly from the city and the surrounding area and the majority are less than 30 years old.

“We are very impressed with the quality of the CVs, as many came with excellent hospitality experience.synge

“Granted, some people applied from outside the sector, but we considered everyone who has customer service experience.

“We did extensive research before launching and believe there is a strong demand for this artisan approach.

“Nowadays, people in Derry or Donegal want what they can get in London or New York and combined with the feedback from applicants, we know that people in the city are passionate about food and want to work in a place that nurtures this spirit.”

Synge & Byrne’s was launched in late 2013 in Greater Belfast and, according to Mr Garvey, was proving popular with a “new audience of coffee connoisseurs.”

He added: “We are a strong local employer with more than 270 people working across the Group.”

Mr Garvey concluded: “The team are finalising World Host Training and the new Derry recruits will have a chance to complete this before the shop opens in the summer.”

Applications for these positions in the Derry outlet are now closed.
