The man whose body was found by a group of Derry schoolchildren on a field trip to Magilligan Beach in Co Derry earlier this week has been identified as a Belfast man who had been missing for four weeks.

John McIlwaine (54) was last seen on the Strand Road in Portstewart on Wednesday, 23 April last

His remains were washed up on Magilligan beach and discovered by primary seven pupils from Model Primary School on Tuesday morning.

Police are not treating Mr McElwaine’s death as suspicious but are anxious to trace his movements in the days leading up to his disappearance

A PSNI spokesman said: “Police are trying to piece together John’s movements before his death.

“At this stage, police are not treating the death as suspicious, but they are keen to speak to anyone who may have saw or spoke with John McIlwaine in the days or weeks after Wednesday 23 April.”
