Derry City Council is offering “English Language and Local Awareness” classes to local resident migrant workers or local ethnic minorities who speak English as an additional language.

A partnership between the Council and North West Academy of English will offer up to five courses, each lasting for 10 weeks.

Funding through the District Council’s Community Relations Programme means  the courses will cost only £10 per participant – a highly subsidised rate.

Local employers and communities are asked to help pass on the information to individuals resident in the Derry City Council area who might wish to benefit from this opportunity.

Mayor, Councillor Martin Reilly welcomed the initiative stating treating and sustaining positive relationships between all communities was essential to not only individuals and communities, but also to the promotion of Derry as a “welcoming place” for investors, businesses and the tourism industry.

He added: “Bi-lingualism is a skill which can make a fantastic contribution to our local economy.

“Many of our locally resident ethnic minorities have shown a strong entrepreneurial spirit and have helped create local jobs as well as sustaining local industry.”

Registration is currently open and further details on the courses are available through contacting Clare Heaney, Director of Studies at the North West Academy of English on  028 71 370773 or e-mail: [email protected].
