DOWN IN THE DOLDRUMS: DERRY CLIPPER STRUGGLING FOR SPEED AS RACE 11 DRAWS TO A CLOSE

clippernewThe Derry “LondonDerry” is in a battle to finish in sixth place as  race 11 of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race draws to a close.

PSP Logistics is in pole position to cross the finish line in first position on day 17 in the race from San Francisco to Panama.

The Derry Clipper, once in the top three, has fought its way back up from eighth place to join Switzerland and OneDLL in the battle for sixth place.

However, skipper Sean McCarter has revealed the Derry entry is struggling with gentle winds.

He said: “We often struggle to find pace in the final stages of races. This one was different and we held the top three positions for 95 per cent of the race.

“Then, in the final 115 miles we’ve managed to drop from third to eighth.

“Through no fault of the crew, who have put their hearts and souls into it, we’ve watched boats 10 to 15 miles away sail past us at six knots whilst we wallow at 1.2 knots. Such is the nature of sailing in the Doldrums.”
